The proposed Pune-Nashik semi-high-speed railway has entered an expert review because its initial alignment was close to the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at Khodad.
The observatory depends on sensitive radio measurements. Officials raised the possibility that electric trains could create electromagnetic interference, prompting Maharashtra to appoint a committee chaired by former Atomic Energy Commission chief Anil Kakodkar.
Options under review include a tunnel, elevated structures or limited changes to the alignment. The committee has 60 days to report on electromagnetic, operational and structural effects.
The process shows why infrastructure planning must include scientific facilities early. A route can be economically attractive and still require engineering changes to protect a public research asset.
